Lori Reed
Lori Reed
Eastern Band of Cherokee

Lori is from Cherokee, NC and is an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.  She received her formal training at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she earned her Associate of Fine Arts Degree in 2-D and 3-D Arts.  She then went to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Studio Arts.

During her studies at the UTK, Lori participated in the Study Abroad Program and attended a semester at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Melbourne, Australia.  This was a great opportunity for her to experience Aboriginal art up close, which has had an influence on Lori’s artwork.

Lori’s art reflects her cultural background, evident in subject matter.  Lori has always been interested in art and the stories of the Cherokee people.  Throughout her youth, she was surrounded by the traditional arts of the Cherokees, having a grandmother who was a basket maker, a grandfather who was a well-known mask carver, and many family members who are also artistic.  Much of Lori’s artwork is full of Cherokee stories, some from Myths and legends and others from family stories and experiences.  Looking at Lori’s artwork is like storytelling in the form of image.  She uses color, pattern, and design to create a narrative that combines abstract forms with figurative forms.  Lori works mostly in acrylic paints, but also likes to use watercolor and oils.

Lori has painted under her former name, Lori A. Lossie, but has returned to using her maiden name, Lori A. Reed.  Therefore, you may see artwork that is signed with either name, depending on the year a piece was created.  Lori continues to live on the Qualla Boundary with her family.
