Crystal Hanna is one of but a few artists who today create
contemporary pottery utilizing designs, shapes, and decorating
techniques consistent with documented, prehistoric "Southeastern
/Temple Mound" styles.
It is of little wonder that her works radiate a
museum-quality appeal, as her traditional hand coiled pottery forms are
made from native clays with native clay slips, and Crystal typically
uses traditional pit-firing methods. Her incorporation of Temple Mound
decorative motifs are authentic to the Early Woodland period (~1000 BC
-1400 AD).
Part artist, part historian, Crystal views her art form
as, "a personal way of making a statement about my own culture and
preserving a heritage." She reminds us that authentic Southeastern
pottery artifacts offer us many clues about the every day life,
rituals, and ceremonies of our SE/Woodland ancestors.Only)
